History and Cultural Tour

This tour offers you the opportunity to be guided along the River Rd, stopping to visit historic settlements on the way before jet boating to the famous Bridge to Nowhere. Located deep in the Whanganui National Park the bridge was built to provide access to the settlement blocks given to returning servicemen after the first World War. The whole area is steeped in history and there is no better way to explore and hear the story than from the local guides of Whanganui River Adventures and Whanganui Tours.

DAY ONE

Arrive in the afternoon at the Flying Fox where your car will be securely parked. Traverse the river on our aerial cable car, then settle into your unique hand-built cottage. Spend the afternoon exploring the Flying Fox site, take a swim in the river, or walk to the nearby historic Koriniti Post Office. Relax and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the evening with a glass of wine or perhaps a soak in a bush bath.

DAY TWO

Collect your fresh packed lunch and then catch the rural Mail Bus for an informative trip along the River Rd to Pipiriki. As you deliver the mail you will visit local farming stations and stop at historic sites such as Kawana Mill and Hiruharama (Jerusalem) where your local guide will take you on a tour around the convent and provide morning tea.

Once you arrive in Pipiriki, you will board the jet boat for a 55 minute jet boat journey upriver to the Mangapurua Landing. You will travel through an area of spectacular natural features with deep river gorges covered with green tree ferns and lush native vegetation. You will then be guided on an easy grade 40 minute walk from the Mangapurua landing following in the footsteps of the early pioneers along the old roadway to the “BRIDGE TO NOWHERE” where you will stop for lunch on this historical monument of a bygone era and learn the history from your local guide.

On your return to Pipriki you will be met by the Mail Bus and returned to the Flying Fox where you can spend the evening relaxing or reading more about the area from our library of local history books.
