“What are you making Jane?” One of the things visitors often comment on whilst staying at the Flying Fox is the fact that we make things from scratch, be it bread, jam, granola, muffins, lemon honey or dishes like lasagne or a pie. In the last few weeks it’s been plum jam, blackberry and apple ice cream, plum and blackberry wine, marmalade and preserved lemons, Beans have been frozen, and the excess of zucchinis are about to be pickled……. Having recently had the opportunity for a short break, thanks to The Global Hobos, we headed off to Taupo for two days of R & R. A search of Air BnB turned up a great modern apartment in the quiet suburb of Botanic Heights and we arrived to a warm welcome from host Anita. We had deliberately booked something which looked different to home and we certainly achieved that – the house was only four years old and the apartment, which was actually the ground floor of the family home, was beautiful in its modernity and minimalist feel. One of the most rewarding things since we have been at the Flying Fox is the experience of having volunteers or WWOOFERS stay with us. In exchange for a few hours help each day hosts provide food and accommodation for volunteers. Started in England 1971, the original WWOOF scheme (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) was designed to be a cultural exchange with volunteers learning about organic productions methods and sustainable lifestyles whilst experiencing living with local families. Now worldwide, WWOOF and a number of other similar schemes are providing opportunities for travellers globally. We have used WWOOF and also belong to couple of schemes such as HelpX and Workaway which enable volunteers and hosts to get together. These subsequent schemes …
Kia Ora Koutou and welcome to the first Flying Fox blog post. I wanted to use this post to introduce ‘The Flying Fox’…who we are and what we do! We are Jane and Kelly, owner/operators for the Flying Fox. We moved to The Flying Fox in December 2015 from Whanganui, taking over from the previous owners who originally developed the site into tourist accommodation. We both needed a change from the careers we had been pursuing and this move has allowed us to follow our dream of living rurally and sustainably away from the commercialism of modern society.
