Gentle Journey
The Whanganui River has been the pathway to the hinterland for many generations of Maori over time and more recently for the European pioneers who left their homelands for a brave new world.

The stories of the journeys of both peoples are integral to the history of this country and it is difficult to visit our area without absorbing some element of this.

Our three hour journeys on the lower river by canoe or kayak from our place at Koriniti to the river landing at Omaka provide an opportunity to travel these ancient paths and to imagine those who have been before us and their lives.

Our trips are backed up by a comprehensive safety plan, and includes paddling instruction and practise in the calm water in front of our place, John will accompany you for the first part of your journey in his handmade wooden boat ‘Te Marena’, we also provide an interpretative map with historical information, and radios for communication with us to ensure we are there to meet you with refreshments at the end of your journey.

We do reserve the right to decide on your ability to make this journey, as although it is a relatively gentle section of river, all water journeys carry an element of risk which we need to minimise.

For all our trips we also reserve the right to cancel if weather and/or river conditions are such that your safety and enjoyment of the experience would be compromised. Please advise us when booking a canoe journey if you have any existing medical conditions, your level of fitness and if you have any previous experience in canoeing or kayaking on rivers. With prior notice we can also arrange coach transport to and from Whanganui if required, which includes vehicle storage if required.
